A dyslexia assessment helps to identify your child's strengths, as well as areas they may be struggling. The assessment explores:
Cognitive abilities (vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and visual problem-solving)
Cognitive processing (phonological awareness/processing of sounds, short-term and working memory, speed of processing)
Reading skills (word reading, nonword reading, reading comprehension, speed and accuracy)
Spelling and writing skills
This information, along with background information and observations made during the assessment, allow me to formally identify whether your child is dyslexic. If dyslexia is identified, this decision is valid throughout their education.
First, make contact with me via email. I will give you a call to talk things through, and help you decide if an assessment is right for your child. Then I will send you a background questionnaire to complete - this provides important information for the assessment.
Next, I contact you to offer available dates. Finally, you will be sent a payment link - once payment has been made your appointment is confirmed.
A dyslexia assessment for children (age 8+) and young people who are not in employment is charged at £400.
This includes a detailed, full diagnostic report which is valid to support exam adjustments and DSA at university (Disabled Student's Allowance).
Explain that we will be doing a range of activities to understand what they're good at, and why they find some things hard. It's not like a school test, and we do things in a very relaxed way.
It's normal to feel nervous - hopefully once you meet me you will quickly feel more relaxed. This will help you, your parents, and school understand how to best support your learning. Most people enjoy the appointment and have some fun!
Aim to arrive at the time of your appointment or up to 5 minutes early (I may be in another appointment). There is plenty of free parking available at the back of Brough Library (also known as The Petuaria Centre). If your child wears glasses or uses a tinted overlay, be sure to bring them. Bring a drink and small snack for your child to have during their break. If you have any issues on the day, please give me a call or text on my mobile.
The appointment will last around 2 - 2.5 hours, you can wait in the library or return later. Afterwards I will provide verbal feedback (sometimes on the day, if not, via phone within a week).
I understand that sometimes unexpected events happen and you may need to change your appointment. However, as an independent assessor, my appointments are very limited, and my time is precious. Once payment has been made, your appointment is fixed.
If you need to cancel or change your appointment I ask for at least one week's notice.
Full Terms & Conditions will be sent upon booking.
You will receive the written report within 2-4 weeks of your appointment via email. This report includes recommendations for school (in-class, intervention and exam access arrangements) and ways you can support at home.
Send this report onto your child's school, and request a meeting to discuss next steps.
Don't worry if you feel unsure how to progress things - I can guide you through the process.
